Dear Readers,
Thank you! Editing, producing, designing (and reading!) this journal has been exceptionally gratifying. We are thankful for the bright and bold writers who each week step out of the confines of their traditional disciplines. We are thankful for being introduced to new ideas, artistic works and academic texts. And we are thankful for our readers who continue to engage in and be nourished by our site.
Over the next few weeks we will be introducing a new design and logo and we want to start by introducing our new name: Synapsis.
Synapsis is the Greek for connection, suggests the idea of synopsis and gives rise to the neural synapse. A synopsis is a general feeling, a condensation and an abstract. The one hundred trillion to one quadrillion synapses in the human brain receive and articulate neuronal inputs. These synapses bridge neurons, but also modify, dampen, and augment signals. The synapse is the site of memory and perhaps consciousness.
We want our journal to bridge disciplinary divides, connecting the biological sciences with the humanities and social sciences. We want to provide a synoptic view, a more comprehensive picture of human knowledge. Science is not neutral and can only be properly valued in a context that emphasizes vulnerability, equality and uncertainty.
